Tom Cruise stars in 'ONE SHOT' currently shooting in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH -- Goodbye Christian Bale and hello Tom Cruise.

The Hollywood superstar is currently shooting a movie in Pittsburgh, fresh on the heels of "The Dark Knight Rises."
Actress Rosamund Pike will star opposite Cruise in "One Shot," Pike, whose credits include "Pride and Prejudice" and "Die Another Day" will star as a defense lawyer for the serial murderer that "Jack Reacher" (Cruise) wants to take down. The film's title stems from the murderer's weapon of choice: a sniper rifle. Christopher McQuarrie, who won the 1996 best screenwriting Oscar for "The Usual Suspects," is directing.

"One Shot" is based on a novel  by Lee Child.

Register before 12/10/11 and save $50

An intensive workshop to prepare the actor for working on a film or television set and to produce a clip for their demo reel. Students will concentrate on the development of acting skills through working on a film based on 12 ANGRY MEN, a 1957 film directed by Sidney Lumet. Our modern adaptation of this film will allow each student to be cast in a substantial role.

This class will guide the student, step by step, from the audition process, through preparation and rehearsal to actually filming on a set. In addition, students will also learn industry etiquette and terminology. We will be shooting with two cameras and a film crew to produce a product worthy for the actors' demo reels.

Students, friends and family members are invited to attend the WRAP PARTY and SCREENING of the film at the GATEWAY FILM CENTER. Students will receive a DVD of the film and a individual clip for their demo reels.

The film will also be screened for regional Casting Directors, Agents and Filmmakers.

CRAFT NOTES by Ed Hooks

"How to Study Acting"

I don't know how other teachers do it, but I figure that actors who study with me want to be paid to act. Even if a student's aspirations reach only to community theatre or acting-class-as-a-recreational activity, I still am going to push her toward the level of work I believe is necessary to be cast on Broadway or in major films.
Given that standard, here is what I expect from all of my students:

1) Commitment. It's okay with me if you are a beginner. We all have to start some place. There is no right age nor time to begin acting any more than there is a right age or time to begin playing the piano or painting. I am particularly interested in working with people -- beginning or experienced -- who are respectful of acting as an art form, who want to make a difference in the world, who are adventurous.

2) Do Your Homework: Learning lines is the least important part of acting. I expect you to do the work that supports the written word. Acting is like an ice berg. 85% of it is under water. But if that 85% is not there, you wind up with ice cubes instead of an ice berg.

3) Support Your Fellow Actors: If you are not feeling good and are contemplating being absent from one of my classes, ask yourself if you are sick enough to miss a show. Would you call the stage manager and tell her you can't make it? If your sickness doesn't pass that litmus test, go to class.

4) Above all, I treasure people who believe, as I do, that acting is not only an honorable thing to do with ones life -- but is fun.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Respect for Acting by Uta Hagen

"This fascinating and detailed book about acting is Miss Hagen's credo, the accumulated wisdom of her years spent in intimate communion with her art. It is at once the voicing of her exacting standards for herself and those she teaches, and an explanation of the means to the end. For those unable to avail themselves of her personal tutelage, her book is the best substitute."
